Why Does Your Face Look More Tired in Winter? Treatments for Dull Skin, Dehydration & Loss of Radiance

From the The RAKUS Clinic, Knightsbridge

Winter can make even relatively healthy skin look noticeably different. The complexion may appear flatter, fine lines can seem more obvious and skin that usually feels comfortable may suddenly become tight, rough or difficult to keep hydrated.

It is easy to put this down to being tired, but the change is often happening in the skin itself. Cold outdoor air, central heating and repeated movement between different temperatures can all affect the skin’s moisture balance and barrier. Add darker days and the after-effects of summer sun exposure, and the result can be skin that looks less fresh and radiant than it did a few months earlier.

At RAKUS Clinic in Knightsbridge, we often see patients during autumn and winter who do not necessarily want to change anything about their face. They simply feel that their skin looks tired.

The important question is what is causing that change. Dryness, dehydration, congestion and changes in skin quality can all reduce radiance, but they do not necessarily require the same treatment.

Why Does My Skin Look Dull and Tired in Winter?

Radiant skin reflects light relatively evenly. When the surface becomes rougher, dehydrated or covered by an accumulation of dead skin cells, light scatters differently and the complexion can appear dull.

Cold air generally contains less moisture, while indoor heating can create a dry environment for many hours of the day. Moving repeatedly between heated rooms and cold outdoor temperatures can also be challenging for skin that is already dry or sensitive.

As moisture levels fall, the outer layers of the skin may become less supple. Fine dehydration lines can look more noticeable and makeup may begin to sit differently. If dead skin cells and congestion are also present, the complexion can lose some of its clarity.

This is why simply applying a richer moisturiser does not always produce the change someone is hoping for. Skincare remains important, but persistent dullness may involve more than surface dryness.

Can a Hydrafacial Help Dull Winter Skin?

For skin that looks dull because of surface build-up, congestion and dehydration, Hydrafacial is often a useful starting point.

The treatment combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration. Its vortex technology helps remove dead skin cells and debris while delivering hydrating serums containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and peptides.

This can be particularly useful in winter because dull skin is not always simply lacking moisture. Sometimes the surface needs to be cleared first so that the complexion looks smoother and fresher.

Hydrafacial can be considered when skin is:

  • dull or lacklustre
  • dehydrated
  • congested
  • rough or uneven in texture
  • in need of a fresher appearance without significant downtime

One of its advantages is immediacy. Skin will often look smoother and more radiant shortly after treatment, which is why Hydrafacial is frequently chosen before Christmas parties, winter weddings and other events.

If the skin looks tired because its overall quality, elasticity and hydration have declined more substantially, however, a facial alone may not address everything we are seeing. That is when we may discuss treatments that work within the skin rather than concentrating primarily on its surface.

Is Profhilo Good for Dry or Dehydrated Winter Skin?

Profhilo is particularly useful when dehydration feels more persistent and the concern is broader skin quality rather than congestion or surface dullness alone.

It is an injectable treatment containing a high concentration of hyaluronic acid. Rather than behaving like a conventional dermal filler, Profhilo spreads through the tissues to improve hydration while supporting collagen and elastin production.

Patients sometimes describe it as an “injectable moisturiser”. While that is a simplified description, it helps distinguish Profhilo from treatments designed to create facial volume or alter contours.

We would be more likely to discuss Profhilo when winter skin is showing a combination of dehydration, fine lines, reduced elasticity or a slightly crepey quality. It can be used on areas including the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

Unlike a treatment chosen primarily for an immediate glow, Profhilo is normally performed as a course, commonly with two treatments approximately four weeks apart, with improvements developing progressively.

For someone whose skin simply needs refreshing before an event, this may be more treatment than is necessary. For someone who repeatedly feels that their skin looks depleted despite good skincare, it may be a more appropriate approach. Similar issues can occur after travel, which we discuss in more detail in our guide to Profhilo for post-flight skin dehydration.

How Can Exosomes Help Tired-Looking Skin?

Exosomes take a different approach.

At RAKUS Clinic, EXO|E plant-derived exosomes are used to support cellular signalling and skin regeneration. The treatment is designed to support processes associated with collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production, with potential improvements in hydration, tone, texture and radiance.

This can make Exosomes relevant when dullness exists alongside broader concerns about skin quality.

They can be used as a standalone treatment or incorporated into a wider treatment plan. Exosomes can also be used following procedures such as microneedling, laser, energy-based or injectable treatments to support recovery and overall skin rejuvenation.

For winter skin, we may consider Exosomes where the complexion looks depleted, uneven or less resilient rather than simply dry on the surface. They may also be relevant when we are already carrying out another procedure and want to support the skin through recovery.

Not every patient with dull skin needs regenerative treatment. Treatment should reflect the condition of the skin rather than how new or sophisticated a particular option sounds.

What Is LDM Triple and Can It Help Dehydrated Skin?

LDM Triple is a non-invasive ultrasound treatment that can be particularly useful when winter skin needs calming and support as well as improved hydration.

The technology rapidly alternates between three ultrasound frequencies. Rather than deliberately heating or damaging the skin, it is designed to influence processes associated with inflammation, cellular communication, hydration and the extracellular matrix.

In practical terms, we may consider LDM Triple when skin is dehydrated, sensitive or looking tired but we do not want to introduce needles or significant downtime.

It can also be useful when the skin feels more reactive during winter. Someone whose complexion is simultaneously dull, dehydrated and easily irritated may not be an ideal candidate for simply increasing exfoliation. In these cases, supporting hydration and the skin barrier can be a more sensible priority.

Patients may notice improved hydration, calmness and glow following treatment, while a course can be used when we are aiming for progressive improvement in overall skin quality.

How Can You Keep Your Skin Looking More Radiant Through Winter?

Clinic treatments work best alongside sensible day-to-day skincare.

A harsh routine can make winter dryness worse, particularly if exfoliating acids, retinoids and active products are being layered without considering how the skin is responding. If the skin becomes tight, flaky, sore or unusually sensitive, repeatedly exfoliating it in an attempt to restore brightness can be counterproductive.

Consistent moisturisation, gentle cleansing and daily SPF remain important throughout winter. UV exposure does not disappear when temperatures fall, and protecting the skin remains an important part of maintaining its condition and reducing further sun-related changes.

The most useful approach is usually to respond to what your skin is doing now rather than following exactly the same routine throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Winter Skin

Why does my makeup look worse in winter?

Dehydration and rougher surface texture can make foundation collect around fine lines or dry areas rather than sitting evenly. Improving hydration and addressing excess surface build-up can help create a smoother base.

Can oily skin still become dehydrated in winter?

Yes. Oil and water levels within the skin are different issues. Oily or combination skin can still lack water and feel tight or look dull, particularly in dry indoor environments.

Should I stop exfoliating if my skin becomes dry in winter?

Not necessarily, but the frequency and type of exfoliation may need to change. If your skin is becoming irritated, flaky or sensitive, increasing exfoliation is unlikely to be helpful. Your skincare routine should be adjusted to your current skin condition.

How far ahead of a winter event should I plan a skin treatment?

It depends on the treatment. Hydrafacial can be useful when a relatively immediate glow is wanted, while Profhilo develops over a course of treatment and should be planned further ahead. If you have a specific event date, your practitioner can work backwards from it and advise an appropriate schedule.

Does drinking more water fix dehydrated skin?

Good hydration is important for general health, but dehydrated skin is not determined by water intake alone. The condition of the skin barrier and its ability to retain moisture also matter, so persistent dehydration may need to be addressed through skincare and appropriate treatment.

Looking Tired Even When You Are Not?

If your face seems to lose its usual freshness as winter sets in, it is worth identifying whether the main issue is surface dryness, dehydration, congestion, sensitivity or a broader change in skin quality.

At RAKUS Clinic in Knightsbridge, London, we assess the skin before recommending treatment and can advise whether Hydrafacial, Profhilo, Exosomes or LDM Triple is most appropriate.

The objective is not to make your face look different. It is to help the skin look healthier, better hydrated and more like itself again.
