When Should You Start Collagen-Stimulating Treatments? A Guide to Collagen Loss and Skin Ageing

From the The RAKUS Clinic, Knightsbridge

There is a point in many consultations when a patient says, “I don’t think I need anything dramatic yet, but I’d like to keep my skin looking like this.”

Starting collagen-stimulating treatments does not mean treating wrinkles before they exist or beginning an intensive treatment programme in your twenties. It is about recognising when the skin is beginning to change and deciding whether supporting collagen at that stage could be beneficial.

Collagen provides much of the structural support that keeps skin firm, resilient and smooth. As we age, collagen production becomes less efficient and the existing collagen framework within the skin changes. Hormonal changes, particularly declining oestrogen around menopause, can make these effects more noticeable.

At RAKUS Clinic in Knightsbridge, London, we see patients at very different stages of this process. Some still have excellent skin quality but are beginning to notice subtle changes, while others come to us when laxity, crepiness or loss of firmness is more established. This is why the more useful question is not simply, “What age should I start collagen-stimulating treatments?” but, “What is my skin beginning to need?”

What Happens to Collagen as Your Skin Ages?

The first signs of collagen loss are not always obvious sagging. Fine lines may remain visible for longer after facial movement, make-up can begin to settle differently around the eyes, the cheeks may feel less firm or the jawline can appear slightly softer. Crepiness can also develop around areas such as the neck, upper arms, abdomen or knees.

How quickly these changes appear varies considerably. Genetics, sun exposure, smoking, hormonal changes and overall skin health all play a part, which is why chronological age alone is rarely a useful basis for deciding when treatment should begin.

What Is the Best Age to Start Collagen-Stimulating Treatments?

There is no universal starting age. In your late twenties or early thirties, if the skin is firm and healthy, good skincare and consistent sun protection may be all that is needed.

During the thirties and forties, subtle changes such as persistent fine lines, reduced firmness or early laxity can make collagen-stimulating treatments more relevant. However, these changes occur at different ages, so treatment should be guided by the condition of the skin, including its quality, elasticity and degree of laxity, rather than age alone.

Which Collagen-Stimulating Treatment Is Best for Early Skin Ageing?

There is no single “best” collagen treatment because different technologies and injectables address different aspects of ageing.

Some are primarily useful for hydration and skin quality. Others encourage more direct collagen stimulation, while energy-based technologies may be considered when laxity and loss of firmness have become more noticeable.

At RAKUS Clinic, the treatment we choose depends on what we are trying to improve.

Profhilo: When Hydration and Skin Quality Are the Main Concern

Profhilo can be particularly useful when the skin is beginning to look dehydrated, crepey or less elastic, but significant laxity is not yet the main concern.

Profhilo contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, but it is not used like a traditional dermal filler. Rather than creating facial volume or changing contours, it disperses through the tissue to improve hydration and support skin remodelling.

In practice, it can suit patients who tell us their skin simply does not feel as fresh, smooth or resilient as it once did.

It can be used on areas including the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen. Treatment is usually carried out as a course rather than viewed as a one-off solution, with the exact plan determined according to the patient and treatment area.

Where laxity has become more established, however, improving hydration and skin quality alone may not provide enough structural improvement. At this point, we would consider whether another form of collagen stimulation is more appropriate.

Polynucleotides: When Skin Repair and Regeneration Need More Attention

Polynucleotides take a different approach. At RAKUS Clinic, we use PolyPhil by Chroma. Polynucleotides are used to support skin regeneration and fibroblast activity, helping to improve concerns such as fine lines, elasticity, hydration and overall skin quality.

They can be particularly useful in delicate areas, including the under-eye region, as well as the face, hands and décolletage.

This is an important distinction because skin ageing is not purely about sagging. The quality of the skin itself changes. Where it is becoming thinner, more crepey or less resilient, a regenerative treatment may be appropriate without immediately moving to a more intensive lifting or tightening treatment.

JULÄINE: When More Direct Collagen Stimulation Is Needed

JULÄINE is a PLLA-based injectable collagen stimulator. Unlike a conventional hyaluronic acid filler, its purpose is not to provide immediate volume.

Instead, it works progressively by stimulating new collagen formation, with the aim of improving firmness, elasticity and skin density over time.

This can be particularly relevant for patients who have started to lose some of the firmness they once had but do not necessarily want their face to look fuller. Adding volume is not always the answer to early facial ageing, particularly when the underlying concern is changing tissue quality.

JULÄINE may therefore be considered for concerns such as mild laxity, fine lines and early ageing changes. Results develop gradually as collagen production increases, making it better suited to patients looking for progressive rather than immediate change.

When Is an Energy-Based Collagen Treatment More Appropriate?

As laxity becomes a more significant part of the concern, we may look beyond injectable skin treatments.

This does not necessarily mean the skin has reached a particular stage or age. It simply means that the problem we are trying to address has changed. A patient with early loss of jawline definition, for example, may require a different approach from someone whose main concern is dehydrated or crepey skin.

Sofwave for Early to Moderate Laxity

Sofwave uses ultrasound energy to heat the dermis, triggering a healing response that stimulates new collagen and elastin.

It can be useful when a patient is beginning to notice fine lines or mild to moderate laxity but wants a non-surgical treatment with relatively little downtime.

Rather than producing an instant change, improvement develops progressively as collagen remodelling takes place. Depending on the skin and the degree of correction required, further treatment may be considered after the initial result has developed.

Thermage FLX for Skin Tightening on the Face and Body

Thermage FLX uses radiofrequency energy to heat collagen-rich tissue, stimulating collagen remodelling and new collagen production over the following months.

One of its advantages is versatility. Thermage FLX can be used on the face and jawline as well as areas such as the abdomen, arms, thighs and knees. It can also be used around the eye area.

For a patient whose concern has moved from subtle changes in skin quality to visible looseness or loss of firmness, an energy-based tightening treatment may be more appropriate than relying solely on an injectable skin-quality treatment.

Ultherapy Prime When Deeper Support Is Needed

Ultherapy Prime uses micro-focused ultrasound to deliver energy at targeted tissue depths, stimulating new collagen while helping to lift and tighten areas including the face, jawline, neck, under the chin and décolletage.

It becomes particularly relevant when we are addressing deeper laxity rather than primarily surface-level changes in skin quality.

The ability to target different tissue depths means treatment can be planned according to the anatomy and degree of laxity present. This is why starting collagen treatments earlier does not mean doing every treatment earlier. It means choosing an intervention that is proportionate to what is happening within the skin.

Can You Start Collagen Treatments Too Early?

There is little value in treating healthy, firm skin aggressively simply because you are concerned about how it might age in the future. No aesthetic treatment can permanently stop the ageing process, either.

A more considered approach is to protect the skin properly and introduce treatment when there is something meaningful to address. For some patients that may happen in their early thirties, while for others it will be considerably later.

This is where a proper assessment matters. It allows us to distinguish between someone who could benefit from active collagen stimulation and someone whose skin may currently need little more than good skincare and consistent SPF.

FAQs About Collagen-Stimulating Treatments

How long does newly stimulated collagen last?

There is no single timeframe because treatments stimulate and remodel collagen in different ways. Age, genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle and the treatment used can all influence how long improvements are maintained. Rather than following an identical schedule indefinitely, maintenance should be reviewed according to how your skin responds and changes over time.

Can collagen-stimulating treatments replace dermal filler?

Not necessarily. They address different aspects of facial ageing. Dermal filler may be appropriate where structural volume has been lost, whereas collagen-stimulating treatments are used to encourage gradual improvement within the tissue. Some patients may benefit from one approach, while others may require a combination.

Are collagen-stimulating treatments suitable for men?

Yes. Suitability is based on skin quality, anatomy, laxity and the concern being treated rather than gender. The treatment plan should still be tailored to the individual’s facial structure and desired outcome.

Do collagen-stimulating treatments make your face look fuller?

Not necessarily. Energy-based treatments such as Thermage FLX, Sofwave and Ultherapy Prime stimulate collagen without adding filler. Profhilo focuses on hydration and skin remodelling, while JULÄINE encourages gradual collagen production rather than creating the immediate volume associated with a traditional hyaluronic acid filler.

Planning Collagen-Stimulating Treatments in Knightsbridge, London

There is no particular birthday at which everyone should start collagen-stimulating treatments.

For some patients, the first step may be improving hydration, resilience and overall skin quality. For others, visible changes in firmness or laxity mean that ultrasound or radiofrequency treatment is more appropriate. As the skin continues to change, different approaches can also be combined or introduced gradually rather than trying to address every concern at once.

If you are beginning to notice changes but are unsure whether it is time to start treatment, book a consultation at RAKUS Clinic in Knightsbridge, London to establish what your skin needs now and what may be worth considering in the future.

The aim is not to stop ageing. It is to recognise how the skin is changing and make considered treatment decisions at the right stage.
